Basic Principles Of Solid Lawn Care

For healthy looking and eye catching lawns, there are several guiding principles that should be taken into consideration. First and foremost, the soil condition in which the lawn grows is important. To know what further inputs in regard to nutrients, it is advisable to have a soil analysis done. This can be done using do-it-yourself test kits or professional services. Also ensure that the grass species you intend to have can thrive in the geographical location you are in. Using this as a base, you can then settle on a watering schedule and the most suitable fertilizer to use.

Secondly, ensure that lawns are adequately aerated. Aerated soils have a better capacity of absorbing nutrients, oxygen and water. Make sure that the lawn is not subjected to high traffic rate as this will result in soil compaction. If your lawn has been already exposed to compaction, get a lawn aerator and remedy the situation to avoid a declining lawn. More Basic Lawn Tips To Keep Your Lawn Healthy

If you don’t have a lot of spare time to maintain a beautiful, lush lawn, you’ll be happy to know that there are a few fast tips in lawn care that, if done regularly, will eliminate the need for major work to be done frequently to save a damaged lawn.

Lawns need to be cared for according to the season. During spring, you need to use fertilizers which contain nitrogen, potash and phosphates. In summer, your lawn starts to look wearied and dry, so you should use a high-level nitrogen feed or one that has a proprietary lawn tonic. Autumn lawn care does not require a feed high in nitrogen, but instead it needs the use of more potash and phosphates.

Watering your lawn on a weekly basis during dry spells is very important. In extreme dry weather conditions, over watering your lawn will help in the development of deep rooting. However, be sure to water at the least hot time of day, i.e. in the mornings or late evenings. Continue reading

Lawn Maintenance – The Basics

Having perfect lawns requires special attention, otherwise they may suffer from numerous types of diseases. The key is giving grass everything it needs to be as healthy as possible. The healthier it is, the less likely it will fall victim to infestations and other problems that can be devastating to its root system. Lawn care might be considered a science, but it does not have to be difficult. Instead, it needs to be understood and the various tasks must be completed accordingly.

Trimming the grass to the perfect level for the given season is crucial. For the hotter months of the year, blades should be longer to protect roots and keep the lawn from drying out. Watering according to its needs is also crucial. These are weekly maintenance requirements, but there are others that are necessary on a seasonal or annual basis. For instance, aerating is necessary in early spring to ensure healthy roots that can “breathe.” Fertilizing for the proper season is also a must that should never be overlooked. In the fall, ensure all leaves and other debris is removed, especially before any snowfall. Continue reading

Why Organic Lawn Care?

I want you to know from the top guys: Organic lawns look better and last longer under pressure than to their synthetically treated counterparts.

Mark my words, an organic lawn will last longer and look better during periods of drought, or insect pressure or disease pressure or whatever other pressure you can think of. This is because an organic lawn is supported by healthy soil and healthy soil is the foundation of anything healthy plant.

You see folks, you want to build up the soil first, then be concerned with the actual lawn or turf plants. We need a solid foundation from which to build on or from which to grow our healthy lawn.

By adding organic material to the lawn, you are encouraging biotic activity in the soil which in turn makes nutrients more readily available to the grass roots. It also makes those roots more able to live during stress from the outside (like heat or lack of water)

In turn, the lawn is green and healthy so that more photosynthesis can take place. Some people call this the “soil food web” and it is a viable way to grow a healthy and organic/natural lawn.

Organic Lawn Care – Saving Lawns and the Environment

I am a big fan or lawn care, and I am a bigger fan of safe and organic lawn care. It’s one of those things that I made a decision on a long time ago.

You see, I am VERY passionate about lawn care. I get all excited and fired up when the lawn care season here in the Midwest begins. It’s usually sometime in March when the snow is melting away, and things are starting to wake up. It’s when I like to get out and start making plans for the lawn season ahead.

I’s also at this time that I am tempted to slather on some early season fertilizer to kick start my little patch of green love. Now, first off, i am NOT an extremist when it comes to lawns. In fact, I am pretty much middle-of-the-road. But I also don’t want to throw stuff on my lawn that is not needed and could in fact, end up being harmful not only to my lawn, but to the environment around me. This is where the whole “love and lawn life” idea comes from.

SO back to Spring – the lawn will be pretty brown still, and I know that I can go to the store and get a high nitrogen fertilizer (maybe like a 33-3-3) blend and crank that lawn into high gear. That puppy will be green and beautiful from the jump – but how healthy is that?

It’s much better to have patience and apply a nice, slow and naturally releasing organic fertilizer that will not only help green the lawn ( a bit slower of course) but will also help build the soil. We need to get soil activity going… that is one of the keys.

I know I am kinda rambling here – and I want to tie this together. The key that I want to get across to you guys is that you can have a beautiful, thick and super green lawn that is both healthy and properly vigorous without a lot of effort. You have to be smart about it, that’s it.
